Linking Silver Springs and the city of Ormond Beach, the Florida Black Bear Scenic Byway provides access to a mosaic of natural lands and communities surrounding one of Florida’s most distinctive ecosystems known as the Big Scrub, traversing eastern Marion County and parts of Lake, Putnam and Volusia counties.
A total of 6 natural springs from the Florida aquifer flowing 80 million gallons of water daily can be visited. Associated with the springs are a variety of recreation experiences.
Along the Byway, the visitor can explore the largest sand pine- scrub oak ecosystem in the world. It is a dynamic forest community with a variety of plants and animals.
On the route, the user can cross the St. Johns River by using the Fort Gates Ferry which is the oldest ferry east of the Mississippi River. This is a unique adventure and offers an historical experience.
