Salt Springs

Salt Springs offers plenty of activities for the family; including, fishing, camping, biking and hiking. The neighboring body of water known as Lake Kerr is also a place to enjoy a variety of water sports. Just inside the town limits is “Bass Champions,” a seafood/country cooking restaurant that has become a favorite of locals as well as those from other parts of the state.

A small community west of Salt Springs along the Salt Springs spur (SR 19) of the Florida Black Bear Scenic Byway, and home of the Salt Springs Recreation Area. Ocala National Forest Roads #62 and #29 lead to the Fort Gates Ferry. The ferry service dates back to 1856 and the current ferry is the only car ferry still in existence across the St. Johns River. These roads and the antique ferry itself were approved by the state of Florida for inclusion in the Black Bear Byway in November, 2008.
