The Yearling Locations


The Pulitzer prize-winning novel, The Yearling by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings is set along this byway. This itinerary will take you along the sites of the novel:

    • Hike the Yearling Trail during the morning
    • Visit Silver Glen Springs and the sites of the opening chapter along the spring, the creek, and the boils trail
    • Head to Astor and Volusia, towns on either side of the St. Johns River to see more sites associated with the old town of Volusia

The Cross Florida Barge Canal


Marjorie Harris Carr led the fight to stop the Cross Florida Barge Canal project and reclaim the land to preserve the forests. This spot along the byway is located on the northern corridor of US 19 where you can:

    • See a portion of the canal at Rodman Campgrounds
    • Visit the Kirkpatrick Dam & Rodman Reservoir

Visit the Pioneer Arts Settlement in Barberville


See the numerous authentic period buildings, hear live, local music at one of the festivals. and discover “Cracker” culture. The Pioneer Settlement for the Creative Arts, Inc. was established as “an educational institution whose general nature and objective will be to render constructive, educational, and cultural services to the community through collection, preservation, conservation and exposition of objects which are the cultural heritage of this community.

Visit Silver Springs Nature Park
